Iberostar Tainos Review
Great resort and great staff.
This is the first time we've stayed at a small resort (approx 270
rooms). The hotel is older but very well maintained. Our room was
located in one of the 17 bungalows. Each bungalow had 8 rooms with a 2
sided corner balcony. The rooms were spacious and included a mini fridge
that was re-stocked every other day. We arrived on Jan 9th and were
plagued by cooler weather for the first three days. The same weather
system that froze Florida's orange crop. We toured around Varadero for
the first 3 days waiting for the warm sun that arrived on the 4th day
and stayed with us for the duration of our 1 week trip.
This was our second trip to Varadero in 3 years. We were apprehensive
about the food because in 2007 we experienced some marginal cuisine at
the Barcelo Marina Palace. Not the case here. The food was nothing short
of delicious. You won't find a juicy rib eye steak here but the seafood,
chicken and pork were all good and well prepared. Vegetables, salads,
fruit, cheese and bread were fresh every day. We never noticed any day
old leftovers.
Now for the staff. My wife and I like to bring things from home to leave
for the Cubans. We are also tippers, not big but we do tip every time.
If we order a couple of drinks, we tip a peso, breakfast and lunch a
peso and usually 2 pesos for dinner. All in all, we probably tip 70-80
pesos in a week (less than $100 dollars Canadian). We did come across
many CHEAP people who didn't tip. I wonder if they do that at home?
Getting back to the staff, they are an amazing group, Always smiling,
always cheerful and very affectionate towards each other and the guests.
The entertainment was excellent. They put a lot of work and energy into
their musical/dancing productions. We found out that this resort has 17
different shows so even those staying 2 weeks don't see the same show
twice. They have several wardrobe changes during the shows and their
costumes are a la Las Vegas.
The beach is big for the size of the resort and there's never problem
finding a palapa and lounge chair. Bring a travel mug because the
plastic glasses at the beach are very small. We'll definitely return..
