Iberostar Paraiso Beach Review
Just back
last night fro our 1st time & i wanted to post while everything was still fresh
in my memory. we are a couple in our 40's w/2 teenagers (boy almost 20 & girl
almost 17). we specifically chose this resort because it sounded like it would
have a ton of things for them to do, and if they are happy, we are happy! they
loved club med in Punta Cana (3X) and we wanted something similar but a change
of scenery. i will break this up by topic so you can scan through.
facility
it is everything that we expected---beautiful, clean for the most part, and
BIG!!! we like to walk and was prepared with comfortable shoes and waterproof
bandaids for blisters, so it was not a problem. but we saw many people taking
the tram around. it was very hot and humid, so if you are not in decent shape,
this may be an issue. we were in bldg. 35, overlooking the pool with 2 rooms on
the 3rd floor. we liked this location as it was central to the pool/beach area
and the lobby / restaurants. we received flowers in both room on the 2nd day
which was a nice surprise!
the rooms were ok, but not enough storage/ shelving for things. i agree that the
pillows were uncomfortable, but it is rare to find the perfect bed for everyone!
Food
ok, hate to sound like a complainer, because generally we are not, but this is
the one area that needs improvement. we are not big eaters that like to gorge
but there were some nights that it was hard finding anything enjoyable. one
night @ the buffet was really good with grilled prawns to die for and my husband
& son enjoyed bbq ribs, but that was the night that the big boss from corporate
was there & everyone was at attention. we were asked to fill out a review & we
left an excellent one. but, after that night, the food returned to adequate. we
ate at the Japanese (very good & fun); Mexican (just ok food, but great service
complete with tequila shots); Brazilian (don't go unless you LOVE meat! it was
way too much for us!) loved the fresh Pico & guacamole lunch & the ice cream is
great. 1 scoop of the coconut ice cream over fresh pineapple was my favorite!
Activities
this is our thing!!! we are an active family that like to participate in many
different things. I took the exercise classes by the beach almost every morning.
no one shows up for the classes by the towel stand as I found out my first day.
it is much more enjoyable exercising while looking at the beautiful ocean &
having the breeze keep you cool. only a handful of people show up for the
classes, which is a shame. I taught Pilates 2 mornings which was fun (hi to
anyone that was in my class!) I also took the water aerobics which was fun!
My son played beach volley ball for hours each day & ended up winning a
tournament on his last day so he received the "award" that night. he also
participated in many of the pool/beach games which were a blast. if you like
being active, make sure you check out the board so you know what time/place each
activity is going on. the star friends often walk around & will invite you to
participate, so try some of the fun games!
my husband & daughter liked the sports pool, and they participated in pick up
games of water polo, volley ball & basketball.
hubby & kids also rented jet skis on the beach for an hour & had a blast! I, of
course stayed behind to video tape the fun! i will pass on a tip that was given
to us if you plan on doing this reserve the last time slot of the day which was
4pm for us. they let them stay on an extra 15 minutes because no one was
waiting!!!
NIGHT LIFE
funny story---the 1st night we did not know where everything was yet, so we
ended up at the Lindo's theatre, thinking it was the del mar/beach theatre. so,
we are enjoying the pre show games and the waitress comes up and says that she
can not serve us. my husband leans over to me & says "hey, you said everything
is included, what's up?" still not realizing that we were at the Lindo, we
assumed that she was looking for a tip & was being really obvious about it, so
my husband takes out some $$$ & guess what? she served us all night! it wasn't
until we left & walked into the lobby that we realized we went to the wrong
theatre! ha-ha
most nights we really enjoyed the shows! in addition to the star friends, there
are professional singers & dancers, great live music and elaborate costumes and
lighting. (100 x better then club med!). we missed the magic show because we
went into playa. while the town is an interesting mixture of shops, bars,
restaurants & small hotels, our ultimate destination was senor frogs. what a
wild place! we met another couple from our hotel there (our son knew their boys)
& the action never stopped! Great audience participation (we were dancing on our
chairs); fun waiters and tequila girls that give you the famous (& expensive $7)
senor frog's shots & a beautiful view of the water (even at night!). my kids
wanted to stay longer, but we left around 12:30 & decided to find a van that
would take all 6 of us. we were told to expect to pay $20 for the ride back, so
we were shocked when the van driver only charged us$2 each. well, what we didn't
know was that he was stopping to pick people up along the way. we were laughing
soooo hard, my husband almost didn't make it back to the hotel dry! another
great story!
my kids live for the disco, but initially this was a big problem! my son was
allowed into the galaxy because he is 19, but my daughter could only go to the
teen disco (underground) which we knew & were happy with. well, for the first
two nights, there was no one in the kids disco! every kid would walk up real
excited, go in, realize it was empty & come out! we witnessed this over & over
again! my daughter was so upset, because she was really looking forward to this!
the 3rd day is spoke to Marcus(?) the director of the star friends, that
confirmed that this was an on going problem that they did not know how to solve.
I then decided to talk to Ilse Kobus, who is the director of guest relations,
because I decided if the hotel could not provide a fun night for the older
teens, then I wanted to switch my daughter's wristband to adult & we or my son
would chaperone her at the galaxy. (my son confirmed that there were many
underage kids in the adult disco). she said she was unaware of the problem & she
would take action to rectify the teen disco situation. my son suggested to her
that they place a bouncer at the door & make the kids form a line, rather then
let everyone walk in & turn around to leave. this way a large group will enter
at the same time. well, it worked & my son even went in for a few minutes to get
the kids dancing! there were 100's of teenagers between all the resorts, so why
did it take one kid to come up with a solution? any way, problem solved, (i
hope). please let me know your experience with the teen disco!
EXCURSION
Even though we were all having a blast at the resort, we really wanted to take
advantage of the many great excursions that are in the area, so we spoke to our
Funjet rep in the lobby & decided on the 1/2 day trip to Selvatica. it sounded
perfect for us--11 zip lines (the 2nd largest in north America), jungle bike
tour and cenote swimming followed by a light lunch. the cost was $80 pp.
honestly, i was the skeptic in the group. i envisioned a real rough & primitive
experience. boy, was I wrong! a van picked us up at the lobby @ 9;15 am after
picking up 2 other groups from the Lindo/Maya. we all made pleasant small talk
on the way, until we turned off the main highway onto a road that was still
under construction. that was when the real fun began---the driver thought he had
an ATV and we all held on for dear life as he took us down this dirt path trying
to avoid potholes by swerving from one side of the road to the other. i liken it
to a Disney ride like Jurassic park without the dinosaurs. while we were all
laughing, i know i was also praying to get there in one piece! well, the place
was worth the crazy ride and the $$$, it was beautiful!!! the reception area
looked like it belonged back at the resort w/every modern amenity---flat screen
TV, internet, cool bathrooms w/real plumbing etc. as soon as we arrived, one of
the guides showed us the locker area where you can leave your stuff & started to
harness us up. they are very safety conscience here & triple checked everyone!
they are also super sanitary and gave us disposable gloves and head covers to
wear under the gear. after we all received clear instructions about what to
do/not to do, it was time to zip! i had a minor anxiety attack as i climbed up
to the first platform. i watched my family go one by one and clutching the first
guide i told him i was terrified. he took a little longer with me & then off i
went! honestly, i was scared for the first few lines, then gradually i started
to enjoy the beauty of the jungle, the monkeys and birds we saw and even
watching my son zip upside down w/one of the guides. it was a cool experience!
after that, we returned to the locker area & had a choice of bike riding or
taking an a/c van to the cenote. ok, i admit i took the van while my family
opted for the bikes, but i got to talk to a nice family from NJ & found out we
knew some people in common. small world!) when we arrived at the cenote, i
thought i was on a movie set, it was breathtakingly beautiful!!! unspoiled, yet
completely safe & accessible. here you had the choice to zip line in, cliff dive
or walk down a wooden ladder. the water was cool and beautiful w/many fish
visible. i also saw a few harmless fruit bats flying by the caves...so cool! we
were allowed to stay in this area for 45 minutes and cool off. no one wanted to
leave, but it was time to head back for lunch. we were served on a pretty patio
with umbrellas a delicious lunch of chicken, rice & veggies w/beer or soda
available to purchase. bottled water was free and offered to us throughout the
morning. when it was time to leave, many people wanted pictures with the guides
because they were so nice (& cute!) and we were able to buy a picture of
ourselves zip lining. this place did it right and i would highly recommend it to
anyone that wants a first class experience!!!
